It’s pretty clear to me that Stewart is a writer first and a romantic thriller writer second, in that her prose stands alone on its merits regardless of the genre where her work might be placed. But here, in a clear arch of pewter-grey air, the stars were low and bright and as thick as daisies on a lawn.” (from Stormy Petrel) “It is never quite dark on a clear June night in the highlands… Back in the city, or in fact anywhere that I had lived, the night sky was disfigured by street lamps and the city’s emanations. Vivid (along with evocative and poignant) should be eliminated from the reviewer’s stable, but vivid is one of Stewart’s middle names. Very different from most contemporary thrillers, where a complicated plot is held up as an excuse for inadequate prose (think Dan Brown). More than almost any in this genre, Stewart’s plots require that an alien landscape be brought alive for the reader, so the prose must pull its weight if the plot is to work. Much of the dramatic tension in a Stewart comes from the setting–her heroines usually land in a mystery while vacationing in some exotic (read non-English) locale. The romance then may be read as a safe haven in an unfamiliar and (hence) threatening world. You may want to check it out before reading this post. Part One of my post about Mary Stewart is here.

Now if they can just keep their attraction under wraps, Ash’s lost dream could finally come true. And her business expertise might be Ash’s best bet for getting her last film-and her last chance-financed. She’s curvy, beautiful, and just so damn put together. Not since her ex ripped her heart from her chest in Spielberg-esque style, crushing Ash’s reputation, dreams, and directorial career in one brutal blow. So why does it feel like it’s not quite enough? Which is exactly when former filmmaker Ash Stewart enters camera left, and Rose’s world suddenly goes full technicolor. Still, life is good, with her work, her sisters, and a secret hobby creating incredibly tactile (if surprisingly sexy) mindfulness videos. īusiness consultant Rose Josten might not have officially reached “pug lady” middle age, but she’s already got the pugs-along with their little Gucci coats and trash-lovin’ appetites. Fans of Abby Jimenez and Meryl Wilsner will fall in love with this hilarious and refreshingly authentic novel about second chances, pugs, and finding the perfect muse. He also catalogs the innovative and remarkably effective techniques- investigative approaches that he helped pioneer at the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit- that allow law enforcement agents to construct psychological profiles of the offenders who commit these crimes. In Dark Dreams he reveals the twisted motive and thinking that go into the most reprehensible crimes. Profiler Roy Hazelwood is one of the world's leading experts on the strangest and most dangerous of all aberrant offenders- the sexual criminal. Michaud- will take then deep into the minds of his prey, the world's most dangerous sexual criminals, and reveal the extent to which these individuals permeate our society. Now, in Dark Dreams, Hazelwood- writing with bestselling author Stephen G. The Evil That Men Do introduced readers to the lifework and the techniques of FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood. Livingston's unnamed protagonist call her Psyche, Cogito, Dingbat, or even Carry is endearing in her absurd quest for self-improvement. The prose products that singe this portrait of the psyche burning are tooled like circuitry on a dysfunctional motherboard. Honestly, I do not know how she survived the writing of it." Lindsay Hill "Bomb-pills, birthed birds, and the scorched Jacob's Ladder of a story- stoked neural brinkdom BOMBYONDER is a gestalt of grim and Grimm. Livingston has delivered a fabulous, mind bending book. BOMBYONDER transcends any sense of 'experimentation, ' and occupies, essentially, its own genre. Through the marvel of her language, the book becomes a shimmering whole a miracle met like the first mirror. Livingston devises a pulsing, haywire logic that somehow rivets the parts to each other and the reader to the page. But BOMBYONDER is not merely a scathing, slicingly funny assemblage. Bombs, masks, machinery, birds buried at the bottoms of women, emerge and recede in the blistering landscape. "'Some kind of war happened at some time or another and continued for quite some time to come.' So begins BOMBYONDER, Reb Livingston's blistering, kaleidoscopic, post-bomb- blast shrapnel-storm of a book. thrillingly transgressive coming-of age story by the Taiwanese writer Qiu Miaojin. Illustrating a process of liberation from the strictures of gender through radical self-inquiry, Notes of a Crocodile is a poignant masterpiece of social defiance by a singular voice in contemporary Chinese literature. Told through the eyes of an anonymous lesbian narrator nicknamed Lazi, this cult classic is a postmodern pastiche of diaries, vignettes, mash notes, aphorisms, exegesis, and satire by an incisive prose stylist and major countercultural figure.Īfflicted by her fatalistic attraction to Shui Ling, an older woman, Lazi turns for support to a circle of friends that includes a rich kid turned criminal and his troubled, self-destructive gay lover, as well as a bored, mischievous overachiever and her alluring slacker artist girlfriend. Set in the post-martial-law era of late-1980s Taipei, Notes of a Crocodile is a coming-of-age story of queer misfits discovering love, friendship, and artistic affinity while hardly studying at Taiwan’s most prestigious university.
